Two years, two school titles. Curro Durbanville High School’s Rocket League squad, the CDV Wolves Prime, have made winning a habit, and the Cape Town crew is already back for more.

From Comic Con to GrandWest

The run started at Comic Con Africa in Johannesburg in 2025. Curro Durbanville won the Rocket League final of Telkom VS Gaming’s High School Esports League, a competition that drew more than 90 registered schools that year, and banked R45,000.

Then came the follow-up. At the African Gaming Championship (AGC) at GrandWest in Cape Town, from 16 to 19 July 2026, Curro Durbanville High took first place in the Rocket League schools tournament, part of the school league finals at the event. Curro schools had a big weekend overall: Curro Durbanville Primary won the Minecraft PVP schools title, and Curro Krugersdorp finished second in Valorant.

Meet the Wolves

Rocket League is three-a-side car football, so a squad lives or dies on rotation, timing and trust. The CDV Wolves Prime run a three-player starting line-up, and the grind behind it is serious.

Player Seth Solomons told EWN he has been gaming for six years and put in about 1,000 hours preparing for a year of competitions. That’s the kind of commitment you’d expect from any first-team athlete, and that’s exactly the point the school is making.

“A lot of people still don’t perceive esports as an actual sport,” said Tanya Neethling, the school’s esports manager.

Neethling has guided the team through both title runs. She told EWN the Wolves won Rocket League last year, have qualified again and are back to defend their title.

Why school esports matters

Telkom’s Senior Manager for Content and Gaming, Johann von Backstrom, told EWN that developing players at grassroots level lifts the standard of the bigger teams. He also said girl gamers now make up nearly half of tournament players, and that mobile gaming is lowering the barrier to entry for young players across the continent.

School esports at a glance

  • Telkom VS Gaming High School Esports League: school-only finals at Comic Con Africa in Rocket League and Counter-Strike. Comic Con Africa’s current listing shows a R90,000 prize pool per title, put towards upgrading participating schools’ esports facilities.
  • Nitro African Schools League: ACGL’s school league, with its finals at the African Gaming Championship.
  • Kit matters: at AGC 2026, Curro supplied hardware to two schools that didn’t have their own.

That’s the bigger story here. When a school treats esports like any other first team, with a manager, a practice plan and a shot at silverware, players get a real pathway, and the whole scene gets stronger.
