A Joburg studio just made one of the most talked-about games of the year, and the premise hits different if you are African: Relooted is an Africanfuturist heist game where the job is taking back real African artifacts from Western museums. Not fictional treasure. Seventy actual artifacts, each one researched, each one culturally, historically or spiritually significant to the people it was taken from.

Made in Joburg, played everywhere
Nyamakop, the Johannesburg studio that put African game development on the map with Semblance, is behind it, and the game wears its home proudly: your crew’s hideout sits in a future-imagined Johannesburg, and your team is recruited from across the continent. The hacker, the little brother who causes the mess, and yes, a prim and proper grandma who absolutely pulls her weight.
Plan it like a movie, run it like parkour
The setup is classic heist cinema: case the museum, solve the puzzles, place your crew, map the escape. Then you lift the artifact, the countdown starts, and protagonist Nomali’s flow-based parkour turns your getaway into the montage scene. Plan well and it feels like choreography. Plan badly and you will pay for it. The premise has a sharp story behind it too: a near-future treaty promised artifacts would come home, museums found the loophole, and stealthier diplomacy became necessary.
The world is watching
IGN called it one of the freshest games at Summer Games Fest. GameSpot listed it among their most anticipated. TheGamer said it is the only heist game that ever made them feel like a real master thief. It launched on 10 February and sits at Very Positive on Steam, with 86 percent of reviews recommending it. A South African story, told by South Africans, landing worldwide.
This is exactly the kind of work that shows what Mzansi’s gaming scene can do on a world stage. Pull up, play it, and tell your crew.
