July is an Extra-tier month, and for once Mzansi is not at the back of the queue. Sony has loaded the PlayStation Plus Game Catalogue with two proper heavyweights, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and Rise of the Ronin, plus a stack of co-op and cult picks. And while the US, UK and Japan get the titles on staggered dates this month, South Africa gets the entire lineup in one drop on 21 July. Some of it lands here a week before the Americans get it. Enjoy that sentence.

What lands on 21 July
Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora (PS5) is Ubisoft’s first person open world take on Pandora, and it remains one of the best looking games on the console. Rise of the Ronin (PS5) is Team Ninja’s open world action RPG set in 1863 Japan, from the studio behind Nioh, combat-first and proper meaty. Alongside them: Firefighting Simulator: Ignite (PS5), a four player co-op firefighting sim that is exactly the kind of couch chaos that fills a Play Spot session, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind (PS5, PS4), a retro 2D brawler, Dying Light (PS4), still one of the great co-op zombie games a decade on, Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector (PS5), a brilliant dice-driven narrative RPG, and Snow Bros. Wonderland (PS5) for the arcade heads.
On the Deluxe tier, two PS2-era classics join the Classics Catalogue: Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy and Indigo Prophecy, the Quantic Dream thriller most of us knew as Fahrenheit.
The Mzansi fine print
Three things worth knowing before you renew. First, our top tier is called Deluxe, not Premium. It gets the classics and game trials, but not the console cloud streaming the Premium regions get, which is part of why it costs less. Second, Sony’s own small print says catalogues can differ by region, so check the SA store on 21 July before you celebrate a specific title. Third, from January 2026 Sony adds PS4 games only intermittently, so if you are still on the older console, each month’s PS4 pickings (like Dying Light this month) matter more.
The rand math
Current SA pricing runs R119 a month for Essential, R179 for Extra and R209 for Deluxe, with the annual plans working out cheaper (Extra is R1,239 for the year, which is about R103 a month). Essential does not include the Game Catalogue, so none of the above applies to that tier, its value lives in the separate monthly games and online play. The maths this month is simple: Avatar and Rise of the Ronin both launched locally at north of R1,400 each. One month of Extra is R179. Even if you only finish one of them, you have paid roughly a tenth of the shelf price.
One practical note before you smash download: these are enormous open world games, and two of them together can eat well over 100GB. If your data is precious, plan the downloads around uncapped wifi, or pull up somewhere with fibre, our Play Spots map knows a few.
Worth your rands? Extra: yes, comfortably, this is the strongest catalogue month of the year so far. Deluxe: only if the PS2 classics or game trials genuinely excite you, the R30 premium over Extra buys nostalgia this month, not muscle. Essential: business as usual, nothing here changes your decision.
