South African Tekken 8 competitor Carter Mgebisa is heading to Evo France after winning the Mettlestate Fight Night champion-takes-all bracket.
Mgebisa came through a one-day double-elimination competition featuring some of the country’s strongest Tekken 8 players. The prize was bigger than a trophy: a place at Evo France 2026 in Nice.
Mettlestate confirmed Carter as its Tekken 8 champion after the event, while Jabhi “JabhiM” Mabuza won the separate Street Fighter 6 bracket. We have already covered JabhiM’s qualification, so this one belongs to Carter and the next chapter of his Tekken journey.
One bracket, one ticket to France
Mettlestate Fight Night was built around a simple, unforgiving format. Players had one day to survive a double-elimination bracket, and only the champion in each game earned the international opportunity.
For Carter, that meant navigating the Tekken 8 field with no second-place consolation route to Nice. He finished the job and secured the trip.
The result adds a major international date to a season in which Mgebisa is already active on the official Tekken World Tour leaderboard. Bandai Namco’s tournament portal currently lists him on 100 TWT points, another sign that this qualification is part of an ongoing competitive campaign rather than an isolated result.
What awaits Carter at Evo France
Evo France 2026 takes place in Nice from 9 to 11 October 2026. Tekken 8 is one of eight featured games on the official programme, alongside Street Fighter 6, Guilty Gear Strive, 2XKO and other major fighting titles.
The Tekken 8 tournament will be played on PlayStation 5 under a double-elimination format. Standard sets are best-of-three games, with winners finals, losers semi-finals, losers finals and grand finals expanding to best-of-five.
That structure rewards consistency and adaptation. One loss does not end a run, but every set becomes harder as the bracket narrows. For a player arriving from South Africa, the challenge will be immediate: an open international field, unfamiliar opponents and very little room to settle in.
A South African Tekken story worth following
Carter’s qualification gives the local fighting game community a dedicated Tekken 8 run to support in Nice.
It also shows why events such as Mettlestate Fight Night matter. A domestic bracket can become a direct route to one of the world’s biggest fighting game gatherings. Local performance creates international access, and the winner gets the chance to test South African Tekken against a global field.
