From 3 to 5 December 2026, Playtopia takes over the Homecoming Centre in District Six, Cape Town. Africa’s first annual destination indie games and immersive arts festival has been running since 2018, and it is where the continent’s game makers, artists and players meet the world: a custom built arcade stacked with indie games, talks from local and international creators, immersive art you walk through, and a proper opening night and after party.

Words only get you so far. This is what the 2025 edition looked like from the floor: the arcade glowing, the crowds, the chaos, the joy.

Why this one counts
This is the room where South African games get their flowers next to the world’s best. Playtopia has put local titles like Nyamakop’s Relooted and Team Lazerbeam’s Shroom and Gloom on the same floor as international hits, and for players it is the rare chance to play games months before the rest of the world, with the people who made them standing next to you. If you care about where SA gaming is going, this is the December pilgrimage.
