PlayStation is ending discs for new games

Sony has confirmed the end of an era: physical disc production stops for all new PlayStation releases from January 2028. The announcement landed on the official PlayStation Blog on 1 July, and the pushback was instant. A “Don’t Kill the Disc” campaign on Change.org has already attracted more than 170,000 signatures, and the number keeps climbing.

What is actually changing

From January 2028, newly released PlayStation games will be digital only. Games released before the cut-off, or already scheduled for disc before then, are not affected, and Sony says it will keep producing optical media for existing titles. Your current collection keeps working. What disappears is the option to buy new releases on disc.

Why people are fighting it

The campaign argues that physical games matter for ownership, lending, resale, collecting, preservation and retail jobs. Retailers, the Video Game History Foundation and big industry names including Hideo Kojima have voiced their disappointment.

The Mzansi angle: this one cuts deep in South Africa. Second-hand discs are how a huge slice of local players afford gaming, disc lending keeps whole friend groups playing, and full digital downloads assume fast, affordable internet that plenty of households still do not have. A digital-only future asks the most from the players with the least bandwidth.

Nothing changes overnight: you have until January 2028 to buy new releases on disc, and your existing library is safe. But the direction of travel is now official, and the fight over it is just getting started. We will keep tracking this one.
